Powerball is the other half of the major US lottery duopoly — drawing three times per week with some of the largest jackpots in US history. Like Mega Millions, it has a frequency profile built across hundreds of drawings, and that profile is what WinLottoBig makes accessible as hot/cold data and a number generator.

This guide covers Powerball's structure, its frequency profile, Powerball bonus ball statistics, and the key difference between analyzing Powerball vs Mega Millions data.

How Powerball Works

Powerball players select 5 numbers from 1–69 (white balls) and 1 Powerball from 1–26. Drawings take place Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday nights. Jackpot odds are approximately 1 in 292 million. The three-drawings-per-week cadence means Powerball accumulates historical data faster than Mega Millions, which draws twice weekly.

Key difference from Mega Millions: Powerball's white ball pool is 1–69 (vs Mega Millions' 1–70). The Powerball pool is 1–26 (vs Mega Millions Mega Ball 1–25). Small differences, but they affect which numbers exist and their theoretical frequency.

Powerball Rule Change History

Powerball has changed its rules multiple times, which significantly affects long-term frequency analysis. The most recent major change was in October 2015, when white balls expanded from 1–59 to 1–69 and the Powerball pool changed from 1–35 to 1–26. This dramatically reduced jackpot odds (from 1 in 175M to 1 in 292M) and effectively reset the frequency baseline for many numbers.

For current frequency analysis, data since October 2015 is most relevant. Numbers in the 60–69 range have only been in play since then — similar to the higher numbers in the Mega Millions cold list.

What the Frequency Data Shows

Across Powerball drawings in the current format (post-2015), frequency patterns emerge that mirror what we see in Mega Millions:

CategoryPatternNotes
Hot White BallsMid-range numbers (20s–40s) appear frequentlyMore drawings since pre-2015 format; lower numbers have longest histories
Cold White BallsHigh numbers (60–69) appear less frequentlyOnly in play since October 2015 format change
Hot PowerballLower Powerball numbers (1–10) appear frequentlyCurrent pool is 1–26; lower numbers have more total appearances
Cold PowerballHigh Powerball numbers (20–26) appear less frequentlyHigh numbers entered the pool only in 2015

The Powerball vs Mega Millions Comparison

Drawing Frequency

Powerball draws 156 times per year (3x weekly); Mega Millions draws 104 times per year (2x weekly). This means Powerball accumulates statistical data 50% faster, which can make frequency distributions somewhat more reliable as estimates of the true underlying probability.

Number Pool Size

Powerball's white ball pool (1–69) is slightly smaller than Mega Millions (1–70). The Powerball pool (1–26) is slightly larger than the Mega Ball pool (1–25). These small differences affect which numbers are available and how frequently each one is theoretically expected to appear.

Jackpot Odds

Powerball odds are roughly 1 in 292 million; Mega Millions are roughly 1 in 302 million. Both are effectively equivalent from a practical standpoint — you're far more likely to be struck by lightning than win either jackpot. The statistical difference between 1 in 292M and 1 in 302M is not meaningful for individual ticket purchases.

Using WinLottoBig for Powerball

WinLottoBig tracks Powerball and Mega Millions independently, with separate hot/cold displays and generators for each. For Powerball picks:

A Note on Strategy

As with Mega Millions, frequency data doesn't change your probability of winning a Powerball jackpot. Each drawing is independent. What it does is give you a data-informed framework for selection that avoids purely habitual picks (birthdays clustering in 1–31) and may reduce jackpot-split exposure by incorporating less commonly chosen numbers.
